Akron Bar Foundation awards $37,500 to area nonprofits

AKRON––The Akron Bar Foundation, the charitable arm of the Akron Bar Association, issued eight grants totaling $37,500 to qualified programs that will improve the justice system, equal access to justice and/or will improve the quality of justice through public service and law-related education.

These grants will continue the Summit County Advocacy Program and provide life skills training to individuals who have come through the justice system. This training will increase the self-esteem and self-worth of these individuals as they assimilate back into society. The grants will also provide training for volunteers who work with the funded nonprofits.

The grants awarded are as follows:

Battered Women’s Shelter of Summit and Medina Counties for their Summit County Advocacy Program, $2,500; Bondage Breakers, Inc., for services to individuals and families who have experienced a legal crisis, $8,000; CASA/GAL of Summit County, for training of Guardian ad Litem volunteers, $3,000; Community Legal Aid, for support of legal interns, $5,000; Law & Leadership, for assistance preparing students from under-served communities for post-secondary and professional success, $3,000; Rape Crisis Center, for support of their Summit County Advocacy Program, $3,000; Victim Assistance, for support of their Quality of Justice Enhancement Program, $5,000; Summit County Historical Society, with funds specifically provided by the Judge Judy Nicely Art Fund, for the Special Collections Division of the Akron Summit County Public Library to update a display of the Summit County Courthouse, $3,000 and Mental Health America of Summit County, for a program to provide equal justice for children with severe behavioral and emotional disorders by providing parent advocates to help families obtain services and benefits to which they are entitled, $5,000.

As the charitable arm of the Akron Bar Association, the Foundation strives to improve the quality of justice and improve the image of lawyers through the support of law related and public service programs primarily directed to the Akron Metropolitan area.
